If you’re having joint-replacement surgery, you may be in the hospital for a few days. Here is some information about the things you could take with you.1
Packing for the Hospital
You should leave your valuables at home when you go to the hospital, but there are some things you should bring:
- Glasses (if you wear them)
- Hearing aid
- Dentures
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- A book
When you get dressed to go to the hospital, wear loose clothing that can fit over your new knee and the bandage that will cover it. These are the clothes you will be wearing home, too.
Information You Need to Bring
Make sure you bring an envelope containing all of your necessary paperwork:
- Your medical information (list of medications and nutritional supplements you are taking, allergies, health conditions, contact information for your physicians, etc.)
- A list of phone numbers of people you may need to call
Before You Leave the Hospital
Be sure you have all the necessary contact information for the healthcare team should any questions or any emergency come up. Get this information from the surgeon, hospital and physical therapist. Find out:
- What days and times the office's are open
- How you should handle a medical emergency
- Whom to call after hours
- The best time to reach the surgeon etc
- Whom to call if the GP etc are not available
