The more physically fit you are going into knee replacement surgery, the more fit you’ll be in coming out. Here are some things you should do to get your body ready.
Physical Activity
Because your knees are probably causing you pain, it may be difficult for you to exercise. But do your best to undertake some form of low-impact physical activity. Talk to your surgeon before starting any exercise program.
Performing cardiovascular exercises like swimming or aquatic exercises and stationary cycling in the weeks before your surgery may help you have more physical stamina after the surgery. You should be able to carry on a conversation while exercising.
Some pools offer special classes for people with arthritis. See if you can find one near your home. These classes can help make exercising more fun and less painful.
You can also ask your physical therapist to show you some pre-surgery exercises you can do in your home.
Weight Control
You may have stopped exercising because of the pain in your knee. This often leads to weight gain. And extra weight only puts more pressure on your knee. The best thing for your knee, before and after surgery, is for you to be close to your optimal weight.
It might be a good idea for you to have your surgeon or primary care physician set up a session with a dietician. This can help you learn to improve your diet and help you manage your weight.
